A crafty Christmas 2025 – DIY beaded snowflake ornaments

Happy Christmas eve! Or Merry Christmas depending on where you are in the world! Trying to get this finished before it’s Christmas local time…

I got this beaded snowflake DIY kit some time ago but set it aside to prioritise other crafting projects. I find the kits fun to do, mostly for the materials they provide, but it sometimes doesn’t feel the same since I didn’t originally come up with the idea. Does anyone else feel that way? Anyway, I dug it out to add something new to my Christmas tree this year. It doesn’t have to be a tree ornament, but it makes sense for me!

The main image on the craft kit box of six example snowflakes.

The craft kit contains six snowflake wire frames, a pack of red and clear glass faceted beads, a pack of mirror and glitter beads in gold and silver, a pack of frosted gold seed beads, and a long length of silver thread, and supposedly a set of instructions. I did not have these instructions but at least it seemed rather straightforward to me. The beads I had also looked slightly different to the box images?

The box also doesn’t tell you that you need some straight-nosed and curling pliers as I ended up using these. First I began to cover one arm of a snowflake with a set of beads, alternative red and clear with a large bead in the centre. I bent the wire originally to hold the beads in place, then I decorated the remaining arms with the same pattern.

Once I was done, then I curled every wire into a round circle, tucking the wire end inside. Depending on the type of bead used like a seed bead, I had to do this step before moving on to the other arms.

After that, I cut a length of silver thread and threaded it through one wire end hole, tying a double knot to secure. I left long ends just in case.

I mixed up some of the bead patterns to resemble what I could see on the box image. There were plenty of beads for a gold-themed snowflake, and for a silver or clear-themed one. My Christmas tree is mainly red and gold themed (if you don’t count all the handmade stuff!), so all of these would match it well!

Unfortunately there seemed to be a lack of the larger statement beads in the packs. I could only make exactly one of each type of snowflake. The large gold glitter bead for example, there were ten total! I tried make some with just the smaller beads but they didn’t look as eye-catching to me. I’ll save the remaining three frames for a different time when I get more nice beads!

My three snowflakes from the set. I could have made six but decided not to.

I hung them up on my tree, they really fit well! I especially like the gold one but that’s probably because of the glitter and shiny effects on the beads.

To be honest you can just get the wire frames separately and start your own snowflakes, so I would do that next time. But I still enjoyed it, it took less than a day to finish. This will be my last update this year as I sign off to enjoy the festive season. Merry Christmas everyone and stay safe!

Bonus: Here is my Christmas tree, 2025 edition! As well as the snowflakes, I got a new red bauble since I got a gold one last year. Not too much has been added this year but it still looks like there’s room to add more stuff.

My Christmas tree. Sorry for the cropping, some unrelated stuff was visible…
