A crafty Christmas 2023 – fillable baubles

Depending on your timezone, Merry Christmas from the Atelier! I would have ideally published this post earlier, but there was a bit of a knock-on effect from the last post being a bit delayed, sorry! It might not be useful this close to Christmas but I hope you’ll be inspired for next time.

I made one fillable bauble for an office Christmas-themed competition a while back, using a tiny tree, some small tinsel, a string of gold crimping beads, and a bit of fake snow. I superglued diamante gems on the top and tied a red and gold ribbon to the top. I previously haven’t shone the spotlight on this before, I think it slipped my mind when I was making this and the Christmas pudding bauble in time for the competition!

Fillable baubles are quite popular as home crafts, and I picked up a few on my next craft run, alongside a few other things; some pinecones, wooden snowflakes, colourful bells, and glittery white pom poms. It turns out Christmas crafts go on sale the week before the day! I still had a surplus of fake snow and red tinsel from last time too!

You could fill them with whatever you like, to be honest. You just need to seal them carefully with some hot glue, when you’re happy with the arrangement, and tie some thread through the hole at the top. I used twine for this mostly.

For my first one, I filled it with a selection of bells and some red tinsel for a glitzy look.

For my second one, I filled the bauble with fake snow, then I threaded the wooden snowflake with stretchy silver thread and suspended it through the top. I could have filled it with more fake snow, but it is so messy! I got it everywhere on my desk, so be careful with the quantity!

For my third one, I did another fake snow bauble but with pinecones and fake berries.

By the way, with the extra pinecones, you can wire them up with florist wire and then attach them directly to the tree! I learnt that from this post from Dried Flower Craft. I also just hung up the extra wooden snowflakes.

For my fourth bauble, I put all the pom poms into the bauble because I got a bit tired of using fake snow for everything. You could use this as is, but I thought by itself, it just looked a bit plain?

Also included in my craft run was a pack of Christmas-themed macramé thread. I had the idea to make a big macramé Christmas tree, but I obviously did not have the time for this. However, macramé baubles are quite popular too and I used this Hobbycraft blog post to guide me.

Macramé tends to use the same cream-coloured thread, so I really wanted to make this colourful.

My bauble was a bit too small to work with, so I measured the starting size and then tied the square knots on the table, with a heavy vase to weigh it down.

With the way I positioned my starting threads, I made four square knot lengths of differing colours to cover the bauble! You could definitely make a few of these but I only made the one for now.

Fillable baubles in four ways! Okay, some of them are a bit similar, but you can see how you can personalise them. I really liked the macramé one, I kind of wish I made more than one! But I only had four fillable baubles total! Maybe next year?

My Christmas tree has no theme, you can see how lots of different craft disciplines are represented by the many ornaments. But I also think that the number of disciplines represented are very “me”! I would not have it any other way.
